Silicone Based vs Water Based: Which is Ideal for Anal Sex?

A lot can be said about which type is the best for anal sex but the fact is they both work very well although silicone based lubes are ideal. The anus absorbs water based lubes really fast and this means you will apply more often. Although water based lubes are great for vaginal sex, in this special occasion, silicone based lubes are usually better than water based lubes for anal sex. The thick, gentle and soft silicone based lubricants just do a better job when it comes to anal sex in general.

Best Anal Lubes Reviews

1. Pjur Analyze Me! Anal Glide Silicone Lube

Pjur Analyze Me! Anal Glide Silicone Lube

My first experience with Pjur wasn’t great. I’d tried their Pjur Backdoor Relaxing Anal Glide and the experience was less than pleasant. I honestly thought that my partner and I would take turns and not be in pain as we were while using other products.

You can imagine how disappointed I was when I realized it didn’t work as well as I thought it would. The numbing effect was almost non-existent and the lube got sticky pretty quick. It also didn’t help with the clenching and discomfort I normally experience during penetration.

So when I heard about Pjur Analyze Me! Anal Glide, I was a little hesitant to try it. But after a little coaxing, my partner finally convinced me to try it out and I have to admit that Pjur had worked out many of the small problems I had with their Backdoor Relaxing Anal Glide.

They’d refined their formula and added Jojoba extracts which, they say, help to soften the skin and anal sphincter enhancing the anal sex experience. The lube also has a nice thick consistency that’s not only super slippery but lasts for a very long time.

The lube also has an anal relaxant that actually works. It’s definitely made sex a lot easier for me. It really takes the edge off and makes me feel like I’m ready for a sex marathon.

2. Gun Oil Silicone Lube

Gun Oil Silicone Lube

From the clever packaging, you can’t really tell immediately that it’s anal lube. Your friends might think you are just some gun enthusiast. The lube contains Vitamin E and Aloe Vera for restorative and healing properties. It also doesn’t have a smell and it’s flavor free.

The one thing I absolutely loved about gun oil is the fact that it seemed to last forever and it was very slippery. Once you apply it, you can just slip in and out without having to reapply the lube. And if you like fooling around in the bathtub or in the pool, it will not come off for a very long time. And you can use it as a massage oil.

The only difference between Gun Oil and Pjur lubes is the fact that Gun Oil contains Vitamin E. What I didn’t like it was the taste but overall, the product was worth my money.

3. Swiss Navy Water Based Lube

Swiss Navy Water Based Lube

I’m not a huge fan of water based lubricants because they last for what seems like a second and they also tend to be sticky and tacky so I was surprised to discover that I thoroughly enjoyed using Swiss Navy.

I wouldn’t say that it’s as long lasting as Gun Oil or Pjur Analyze Me! Anal Glide but it definitely lasts a lot longer than other water-based lubes that I’ve tried out. Since it’s a water based lube, I could use it on my sex toys without worrying that it would damage them or that it would take forever to clean them.

I have to give them props for the see-through bottle and the one-handed pump design. The design lets you see how much lube is left and you don’t have to fiddle with a pop top or screw on the cap when you need to reapply the lube.

Swiss Navy also doesn’t have a smell or taste. Considering how thick it is, I found it very pleasant to use because it wasn’t runny or goopy. It also doesn’t stain. I would definitely recommend it, but I wouldn’t recommend it for women to use on their vaginas. It contains parabens and glycerin, which might interfere with the vagina’s PH, leading to irritation or yeast infections.

4. Nooky Anal Lube Water Based Lube

Nooky Anal Lube Water Based Lube

I’d heard a lot of things about Nooky and I wanted to see if it was worth the hype and my money. It’s a water-based lubricant so naturally, I was skeptical but I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered I liked it a lot.

First, it’s extra thick. Unlike other water-based lubes which feel watered down, Nooky lube is durable and is more of a jelly than a lube. It’s actually a silicone-water hybrid so you basically get a taste of both worlds. The lube feels so smooth and slippery and when you combine it with other lubes like Swiss Navy, it works really well.

Cleaning up after using Nooky is pretty easy, unlike Pjur which can be a pain to clean up. If you are planning to have sex in the shower, in the pool or in any water source, you are better off using a lube like Gun Oil or Pjur because Nooky will just wash away.

Finally, for $25, you get a 250ML bottle, which is a lot for me considering I use a lot of lube. Did I mention that it has a high glycol content? This means that should it be exposed to any bacteria, yeast infection or fungal spores, it will prevent it from spreading. Perhaps this is a better option to the Swiss Navy for the ladies.

5. ID Millennium Silicone Based Lube

ID Millenium Silicone Based Lube

Okay, so I talked about how great Pjur lube is but there’s a new competitor in town, ID Millenium. It is so slippery and slick coating that it’s pretty darn awe-inspiring. Just like Gun Oil, you can use it in the shower without worrying that it will dissolve or dry out. It’s also great for massaging.

The only downside to buying this lube is that you have to buy the larger bottles to get a pump; otherwise, if you buy the smaller ones, you’ll get a cap. We all know how opening a cap can get messy especially during reapplication.
